FerriScan: Information for Clinicians

FerriScan - the new non-invasive liver iron measurement test

FerriScan is the first MRI-based technology for the non-invasive measurement of liver iron concentration. FerriScan enables an efficient, easy and most importantly, accurate determination of a patients iron levels.

"With up to 13% of the adult population having elevated serum biochemical iron studies, resolving whether a patient has clinically relevant iron overload or not becomes a fairly commonplace issue. A new non-invasive diagnostic and measurement technique such as FerriScan will be of benefit to clinicians not only in determining the severity or presence of excessive iron stores, but in optimising treatment plans."

"Ferritin, transferrin saturation and HFE gene testing are useful screening tools but for assessment of iron loading and planning treatments, MRI and FerriScan are now the preferred tools. Only FerriScan can determine whether a ferritin of 500-1000 is iron overload requiring treatment or simply an elevation due to inflammation or some other non-iron related cause." -
Professor John K Olynyk, Professor of Gastroenterology, School of Medicine and Pharmacology (University of Western Australia), Fremantle Hospital Campus.

What does FerriScan offer you?

  • Provision of a baseline measurement of the precise concentration and distribution of iron in the liver.
  • Assistance in acquiring a definitive iron overload diagnosis.
  • Ability to achieve optimised treatment that is matched to the exact level of iron loading to produce positive outcomes.
