In Dec 2007, the Thalassaemia International Federation published its new Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Thalassaemia. Chapter 3 is dedicated to Iron overload which constitutes the most important complication in ß-thalassaemia and the major focus of clinical management.
The Guidelines states... 'the prediction of iron loading from serum ferritin can be unreliable......liver iron concentration (LIC) is now regarded as the reference standard for estimating body iron loading and has been shown accurately to predict total body iron stores.'
Page 35 of the Guide discusses the usefulness of the FerriScan test for the measurement of liver iron providing results with excellent sensitivity and specificity.
Resonance Health has been working with the research community and clinicians in the management of iron overload in thalassaemia patients for many years. We are delighted to see the FerriScan test now an established part of clinical practice guidelines for the accurate measurement of body iron stores.
