ASH Meeting 2008
15 Dec 2008

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting recently held in San Francisco attracted more than 21,000 clinicians, scientists, and others from around the world and we are delighted at the strong representation of FerriScan® in those topics related to the management of iron overload.

In this year's meeting, results from the Novartis EPIC and ESCALATOR studies were presented by various haematologists. The EPIC study was a 1-year, open label, multi-centre trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of Exjade® in patients diagnosed with a range of transfusion-dependent iron overload disorders such as beta-thalassaemia majorsickle cell anaemiamyelodysplastic syndromesaplastic anaemiaDiamond-Blackfan anaemia and other rare anaemia. FerriScan®, also known as R2-MRI, was used to measure liver iron concentrations (LIC) in this study.

The ESCALATOR study evaluates the efficacy and safety of Exjade® in beta-thalassaemia major patients in the Middle East countries. FerriScan® (R2-MRI) was also the method of choice to provide the most accurate measure of LIC in this study.

More than 10 abstracts were presented at the meeting which made references to the measurement of LIC using FerriScan®.
