FerriScan Used in MDS Studies
03 Sep 2009

The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of diseases in which the production of blood cells by the bone marrow is disrupted. MDS is extremely common and there are about 76,000 new cases of MDS each year in the United States alone, according to the study of the Medicare Standard Analytic File. At least 50% of patients are asymptomatic and their condition is discovered only incidentally on routine blood counts. FerriScan (also called R2-MRI) has and is continuing to be used to guide chelation therapy in MDS patients.

Please refer to the following publications demonstrating the important role of FerriScan in MDS.

Min Y et al, A multi-centre, open label study evaluating the efficacy of iron chelation therapy with deferasirox in transfusional iron overload patients with myelodysplastic syndromes or asplastic anemia using quantitative R2-MRI. Leukemia Research 2009; 33 (Supp 1):S118-19

Greenberg P.L et al, Change in liver iron concentation (LIC), serum ferritin (SF) over 1 year of deferasirox (Exjade®) therapy in a cohort of patients with MDS. Leukemia Reseach 2009; 33 (Supp 1): S120
